A bear cub is hit by a car in Tennessee.

It staggers up a tree and lies there unconscious.

On the border between North Carolina and Tennessee lies the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

It is the country's most visited national park and is particularly popular with camping fans.

But it is also home to black bears.

Many of them are attracted by carelessly left garbage and leftover food.

In search of food, they leave their safe hiding place and unsuspectingly cross streets - and this is how bad accidents happen again and again.

Like last weekend: A bear cub is hit by a car and remains helpless and injured.

When the manager of a campsite receives information about a wild animal accident, he immediately goes to the scene of the accident.

He finds a bear cub lying motionless on the side of the road in desperate need of help.

So he alerted the nonprofit

Appalachian Bear Rescue

.

A short time later, two animal rescuers arrive.

"The rangers clapped their hands and the cub got up, staggered to the side of the road, climbed a tree and perched in the treetop," the bear rescue said on its Facebook page.

On the opposite side, the rangers spot another bear and two cubs.

They suspect that it is the mother and siblings.

Bear cubs can hardly survive without their mother.

They stay with their mother for up to three years, who teaches them everything during this time and also breastfeeds them.

But this animal is separated from its family, lies injured in a tree and has almost no chance of returning to its family on its own.

Time is of the essence: it is also getting dark and the young animal is no longer conscious.

The rangers decide to sedate it and take it to the

University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine

animal hospital .

Luckily, the vets couldn't find any life-threatening injuries, so Myrtle, as she is now called, was transferred to the bear rescue center a short time later.

“Myrtle is currently staying with us at Hartley House where we can watch her 24 hours a day.

She hasn't eaten anything yet, but if she gets hungry, there's a small bowl of apple and berry sauce and painkillers and a bowl of water ready.

The next few days will be crucial for Myrtle.

Our keepers will do their best,” promises the animal rescue service.

Dana Dodd, executive director of

Appalachian Bear Rescue

, told

Newsweek

that the accident was a result of human incursion into bear territory, not the other way around.

Garbage is also a big problem. “People intentionally or unintentionally provide the bears with food.

When entering bear territory, the litter must be secured.

Many of the bear cubs we have this year, and many in previous years, have been orphaned by human waste."
