In autumn and winter we all work on it every day - but we often don't know exactly what we are aiming for.

What do the numbers and symbols on the heating controller mean?

Stuttgart - While the weather in Germany is currently giving us autumnal temperatures, the heating is turned up a little higher again.

With caution in view of the high energy prices - but many cannot do without it entirely.

Since only numbers and symbols are noted on the radiator thermostat instead of exact temperature information, many consumers cannot directly see how hot or cold they have just set their heating.

We explain which number corresponds to which temperature and what the symbols mean.

Thermostat: Numbers represent specific temperatures

The numbers on a commercial thermostat stand for five different, fixed temperatures.

The small dashes between the numbers represent a temperature difference of one degree Celsius.

The numbers 1 to 5 stand for the following temperatures:

  • 1: 12°C

  • 2: 16ºC

  • 3: 20°C

  • 4: 24°C

  • 5: 28ºC

The thermostat on the radiator ensures that the set temperature is kept at a constant level and does not have to be readjusted again and again.

Once the temperature has been set, it remains the same until the heating is turned off again.

Thermostat: Icons also represent various default settings

On most heater thermostats, in addition to the numbers, there are also symbols - representing various default settings:

  • Snowflake: Frost protection setting (6 °C)

  • Crescent: night temperature (14 °C)

  • Sun: basic setting (20 °C)

Even if consumers are currently being encouraged to save on heating costs, experts warn against turning off the heating completely.

The reason: Cool rooms in apartments are susceptible to mold.

This in turn falls under the “maintenance obligation” in rental agreements, according to which tenants are obliged to prevent damage to the apartment.

However, what the landlord cannot stipulate is a heating requirement or a minimum temperature in certain rooms.

It is therefore possible to heat rooms that are rarely or not used only slightly over the winter months.

There are no concrete temperature values as to how warm it should be in a room.

The Federal Environment Agency recommends a room temperature of around 15 degrees when you're away, which you can lower a little if you're going to be away for a longer period of time.

.

If the windows and walls are also well insulated, lower heating outputs are required because the heat stays in the room longer.
