Braunschweig prosecutors have filed charges against Christian B. - the suspect in the Madeleine McCann case - for several other sex crimes.
As the authority announced on Tuesday, the 45-year-old is accused of three serious rapes and twice serious sexual abuse of children.
However, the indictment does not relate to the investigation into Madeleine McCann.
As the public prosecutor's office in the Lower Saxony city announced, B. is said to have committed the crimes in Portugal between 2000 and 2017.
The victims were therefore girls and women between about ten years and the elderly.
Apparently some of them are unknown, in most cases the investigators refer to video recordings that the accused made himself.
B., who has a criminal record for child abuse, is currently serving a seven-year sentence in Lower Saxony, among other things, for raping a 72-year-old US tourist in Portugal.
According to German authorities, he used to stay there regularly.
Madeleine McCann disappeared from a Portuguese holiday resort in 2007.
To this day, there is no trace of the British girl.
According to the public prosecutor's office in Braunschweig, the investigations continue "regardless of the indictment".
