(ANSA) - BAGHDAD, OCTOBER 13 - Iraqi deputies have elected Abdel Latif Rashid, 78, as the new president.
Rashid, 78, replaces his Iraqi Kurdish colleague Barham Saleh as Head of State after two rounds of voting in Parliament, winning more than 160 votes to 99 for Saleh, an assembly official said.
The election marks the first step to extricate oneself from a serious political crisis, in the hope of putting an end to the violence in the country marked by war.
