From November 3 at 5 p.m., a new type of subscription, entitled "Essential with advertising", will be available on Netflix, for 5.99 euros, including "4 to 5 minutes of advertising per hour", lasting 15 to 30 seconds.

These advertisements will be broadcast “before and during the programmes”.

This subscription will be the least expensive of the range offered by Netflix, which goes from 8.99 euros (“Essential”) to 17.99 euros monthly (“Premium”, with better video definition and more screens accessible simultaneously) .

For rights reasons, “some series and films not available on certain titles (but we are working on it)”, warns Netflix.

Downloading offline programs will also be excluded.

Twelve countries concerned

As with other packages, this "Essential with Ads" subscription will be cancellable or changeable at any time, and will be available on most televisions and mobile devices, Netflix guarantees.

In principle, the ads offered by the platform will be consistent with the genre of the programs (action, drama, romance, science fiction, etc.).

Advertising will not be offered to child profiles, the company told BFM TV.

This new plan will be offered “in Germany, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Korea, the United States, Spain, France, Italy, Japan, Mexico and the United Kingdom”, i.e. twelve countries in total.

With this "low cost" offer, Netflix is seeking to capture a new audience, while it increased its prices last year and is experiencing a drop in subscribers.

In April, the platform announced that it had lost 200,000 customers worldwide in the first quarter compared to 2021, a first for more than ten years.

In question, in particular, inflation, the sharing of access codes, but also the tough competition with the arrival of many other streaming platforms on the market.
