At the request of the Ukrainian Consulate General and civic associations, the city of Munich renamed »Kiewstrasse« to »Kyivstrasse«.
The previous spelling was derived from Russian, the future from Ukrainian, explained the city administration.
The decision of the municipal committee of the city council should be understood as a clear sign of solidarity with Ukraine and the sister city.
The renaming does not affect local residents because no one lives on the street yet.
In this respect, there are hardly any costs.
Mayor Verena Dietl (SPD) explained that Munich has a special relationship with the Ukrainian capital thanks to its town twinning.
»It is important to us to show solidarity and create awareness among the population.«
On Wednesday, the Ukrainian general staff registered further Russian rocket and air strikes on residential buildings and objects of civilian infrastructure.
Since February 2022, Russia has been waging a large-scale war of aggression against Ukraine.
War has been raging in the east of the country since 2014, which was also started by Russia.
The leading democratic economic powers intend to give Ukraine further financial aid in the coming year.
"Together with the international community and in close cooperation with the Ukrainian government, we will continue to work to support Ukraine in the coming months and years," said the G7 finance ministers after a meeting on the sidelines of the IMF autumn meeting in Washington.
The country faces a significant funding gap in 2023 to secure basic services and fix deficiencies in critical infrastructure.
