In the US state of New Hampshire, animal rights activists find an orphaned baby mountain lion.

The rescue is a cat who lovingly adopts the cub.

When the employees of the animal protection organization "Millstone Wildlife Center" find the abandoned baby mountain lion in a chicken coop, the cub desperately cries for its mother.

It quickly becomes clear to the employees that the animal has no chance without a surrogate mother.

At six weeks old, the little mountain lion weighs just one and a half kilograms.

But which foster mother is even suitable for the mountain lion baby?

The team at the Millstone Wildlife Center is initially at a loss as to how to help the wild animal.

In any case, he is still much too small to live with his conspecifics.

In cooperation with the "Spicy Cats" association, which specializes in rescuing street cats, the animal lovers finally come up with an unusual idea.

Cat lady Honeybun is an experienced foster mother and has raised many orphaned kittens.

"She's very, very motherly and patient, so we knew she would be perfect for the mountain lion cub," the association's president told

And indeed: the orphaned baby immediately awakens loving motherhood in the cat.

Honeybun takes in the cub as naturally as if she'd done it hundreds of times before.

"It melts my heart to see them together," says the chairman of "Spicy Cats" about the successful reunion of the two animals.

"As far as we know, this has never been tried before, so it was a bit of a gamble, but I'm thrilled that they are so amazing." On Facebook, the club shares the touching pictures of their cuddles, which are just as heartwarming as the sweet friendship between a raccoon and a deer.

Mountain lion baby has lost mom - it is being prepared for a life in the wild

Honeybun the cat will only be caring for the little mountain lion for a limited time, however, to preserve his natural and life-saving instincts.

When rearing, the animal rights activists also make sure to interact as little as possible with the wild animal.

Losing the fear of people could be fatal for the mountain lion in the wild.

Therefore, the wild animal only stays with its surrogate mother until it is strong enough to live with its fellows at the Millstone Wildlife Center.

There the mountain lion cub is then prepared for life in the wild.

Release is planned for spring.
