Scottish actor Robbie Coltrane, known to the general public for his role as half-giant Rubeus Hagrid in Harry Potter, has died.
The BBC reports.
"Robbie will likely be remembered for decades to come as Hagrid ... a role that brought joy to children and adults alike, causing a stream of fan letters every week for over 20 years," the agent said of him.
He was Hagrid in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001), Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002), Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004), Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005), Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007) and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1 and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2.
His name was Anthony Robert McMillan and he was born in Rutherglen, a town in west-central Scotland, and was 72 years old.
The son of a doctor and a pianist, he devoted himself to acting at the age of twenty, taking the stage name of Coltrane (in tribute to jazz saxophonist John Coltrane) and working in theater and stand-up comedies.
Early in his career he had small roles in numerous films such as Death Live (1980), Scrubbers (1983), Absolute Beginners (1986) and Mona Lisa (1986).
On television he also appeared in Tutti Frutti (1987) and Blackadder (1987).
He co-starred with Eric Idle in Sisters on the Run (1990) and played the Pope in My Dad is the Pope (1991).
In the nineties his career had a strong growth.
He took part in the television series Cracker (1993-1996) with which he won three consecutive British Academy Television Awards for best actor.
Then to successful films such as James Bond's two GoldenEye (1995) and The World is Not Enough (1999).
Also noteworthy is his participation as Sergeant Peter Godley in the Hughes brothers' The True Story of Jack the Ripper-From Hell (2001).
