Do you have to wear a helmet to snowboard?

The first question everyone asks when choosing their equipment for snowboarding: is the helmet mandatory?

Well the answer will depend on the country where you snowboard, but also on your age.

Indeed, in some stations in Nova Scotia, a Province of Canada, it is mandatory.

In Italy, for example, it is required for children and adolescents up to the age of 14, while in France it is highly recommended.

In some ski schools, children are even required to wear it.

As you will have understood, this enthusiasm for the helmet is explained for security reasons.

A snowboard helmet will protect the skull in the event of a fall, the snow can be very hard on certain slopes, the same if there is contact with a fir tree or rocks,

but also in the event of a collision with another skier or snowboarder.

You can pick up a lot of speed on a snow or ski slope, and the consequences of a shock can be dramatic.

Besides safety, a snowboard helmet will keep you warm.

On the slopes, and even on the ski lifts which are often very high up, it can quickly get very cold.

If a hat protects well against this cold, during the descents, you can lose it.

The helmet will stay in place.

Note also that the two should not be combined.

Your snowboard helmet should fit snugly and fit your head size.

A cap will add bulk and reduce the effectiveness of your helmet.

In addition, it is not necessarily very comfortable.

If you do not have a helmet, know that it is very easy to find in the trade.

If you prefer, you can rent one when you rent your snowboard and boots.

How to choose the size of your snowboard helmet?

If you want your snowboard helmet to be really effective when you use it, it is essential that it is in your size.

To know which size to choose, you must take measurements of your skull.

To do this, take a soft tape measure and use it to go around your head.

You have to position it above your eyebrows and make sure that your hair does not distort the measurement too much.

If you don't have a tape measure, take some string and measure the size obtained using a ruler or a rigid tape measure.

The good news is that most snowboard helmet manufacturers use centimeters to size their products, so you won't have a hard time figuring it out.

If it is indicated with letters like S, M or L,

Note that you should change your snowboard helmet every 3 to 5 years.

After a while, the foam inside hardens and becomes brittle.

It therefore no longer protects you effectively and the helmet then greatly loses its usefulness and safety.
