An Australian passenger sparked controversy among commenters on Twitter, after she claimed that she received financial compensation from the airline she was flying with, due to the fact that she had to be "stuck" in the middle seat, between two other heavy passengers.

The Daily Star reports that the woman, Sydney Watson, had previously attracted public attention after sharing on her Twitter account her frustration with sitting next to overweight people during the flight.

Quite a few commenters posted negative reactions to her tweet, in which she talked about the things, tagged American Airlines and wrote "We need to talk".

"too fat to be on a plane"

In her original tweet, Sydney wrote: "I am currently - literally - stuck between two fat people on my flight. This is totally unacceptable and not okay. If fat people want to be fat, fine. But it's something else entirely when I have to be stuck between you, with Your hand rolls over my body for three hours."

Later, she added and complained about "people who are too fat to be on a plane".

Sydney then insisted that overweight people should "buy two seats or not fly".

American Airlines responded on Twitter with the words: "Our passengers come in all sizes and shapes."

It was also noted that the company "regrets that you were not comfortable on your flight."

At this point, Sydney went so far as to share the response she received from American Airlines - this time by email.

In the email message, she was informed that she would receive $150 as defined as a "gesture of good will".

The airline stated that they were unable to move the passenger to a new seat.

"We sincerely regret that the enjoyment and comfort of your flight was marred by another customer's misplaced seat."

They also told her that the flight attendants could not make changes to the seating arrangement.

"We are sure that you know that in the future, you will always be welcome to discuss such a matter with our flight attendants. If we have other available seats, you will be allowed to move so that you can enjoy your flight more."

And maybe it's even better to go on a cruise?

The alleged compensation from the airline may come as a surprise, as many Twitter commenters accused Sydney of "public fat-shaming" and of lacking any compassion.

Other commenters said that "(overweight) people deserve to fly without paying extra".

However, many commenters called the entire event "weird," and others argued that $150 can't really make up for the experience.

More than once, overweight influencers have claimed that airplane seats are not suitable for large people, and that in these cases cruises would be more suitable.

This is thanks to better accessibility, spacious rooms and less judgment than in passenger planes.
