Many food manufacturers are raising prices, but supermarkets and discounters are not following suit.

The power struggle often results in empty shelves.

Where something is already missing - an overview.

Munich – People had almost gotten used to the sight of empty supermarket shelves during the corona pandemic.

Now many shelves are empty again.

Manufacturing costs continue to rise and some food manufacturers are charging more and more money for their products.

But many supermarket chains and discounters do not want to keep up with the price increases.

Since the costs of supplies, raw materials and energy have risen sharply, food manufacturers have been raising prices.

The consequences: empty supermarket shelves and angry customers.

In order to put each other under pressure, the manufacturers no longer supply the shops and, conversely, they throw the products out of their range.

Battle for prices: Ritter Sport chocolate is missing from Kaufland

Food manufacturers and retailers are waging a price war.

The result: empty shelves in supermarkets and discounters.

For a few months now, Kaufland has only had a few remaining stocks of Ritter Sport tablets.

The price negotiations between the discounter and the chocolate manufacturer have been going on since autumn 2021. However, the two parties have not yet agreed on a new contract, as the

Handelsblatt

reported.

Ritter Sport was only recently able to agree on new prices with Kaufland's sister company Lidl.

Mars: delivery stop for Rewe, Penny and Co.

US food manufacturer Mars has stopped supplying all of its products to supermarket chains Rewe and Edeka, as well as discounters Penny and Netto.

The more than 300 items include popular chocolate bars such as Mars, Snickers, Bounty and Twix, but also pet food from Sheba and Frolic and noodles from Miracoli.

The reason for the delivery stop: The dealers do not want to accept the increased product prices.

Milka: No purple panels at Edeka

The same applies to Milka chocolate.

The manufacturer of the purple Mondelez bars is arguing with the supermarket chain Edeka for the second time in 2022.

Edeka rejects a price increase and as a result Mondelez imposes a delivery stop.

The manufacturer justifies its demands with cost increases for raw materials such as milk, wheat and oil, as well as increased prices for packaging.

Coca-Cola and PepsiCo: Price increases lead to delivery stops

At the same time, Edeka is even arguing with the US company Coca-Cola in court.

The beverage manufacturer wanted to raise prices again in September 2022, but Edeka refused.

As a result, Coca-Cola halted beverage supplies to Edeka with brands such as Sprite, Fanta and Coke.

Due to a "unilateral breach of contract", Edeka then went to court.

The competition PepsiCo also wants to raise prices for the second time in the year.

Pepsi is hardly available at Aldi Nord.

Jakobs Kaffee: Empty shelves at Rewe

Popular coffee brands like Jacobs, Senseo, Maxwell House, Tassimo and Café Hag have also disappeared from the shelves at Rewe.

The manufacturer told the Handelsblatt: "We have temporarily suspended our deliveries to Rewe, but are in constructive talks."

Kellogg's: Supermarket to replace store-brand cereals

Kellogg's is also currently in discussions with Rewe.

The discounter has temporarily removed the cereals from its shelves and, with its own brand Ja!

replaced, because Kellogg's is said to demand a price increase of almost 30 percent.

In addition to obvious price increases, food manufacturers are also increasingly resorting to the “shrinkflation” trick.

The product content is changed or reduced without the customer noticing it right away.

But not only the food trade is struggling with increased prices and delivery stops.

German retailers are increasingly struggling with delivery problems.
