First, "Midnights" paralyzed Spotify for a short time, then within 24 hours Taylor Swift's new album was streamed more often than any other before. The US singer sent an emotional tweet to her fans.

Matching the name, Taylor Swift released her new album »Midnights« on Friday night.

Only 24 hours later, it already breaks the first record: It is the most streamed album within one day in the history of Spotify.

"And before the clock struck midnight on October 22nd, Taylor Swift broke the record for the most-streamed album in a single day in Spotify history," the streaming service announced on Twitter.

The US singer then thanked her fans: "How could I be so lucky that you guys are doing something so incredible out here?!

What just happened?!«

But when the album was released at midnight, thousands of fans were initially unable to listen.

According to a Bloomberg report, around 8,000 music streaming app malfunctions across the US were reported to the Downdetector site as of midnight.

Many »Swifties«, as the fans of the US singer call themselves, couldn't use the Spotify search function or couldn't open the entire app.

Return to the old sound

Swift announced at the MTV Video Music Awards in New Jersey in August that her new album will be out in October.

With that, she surprised her fans.

She described the album as the story of "13 sleepless nights scattered throughout my life" and "a journey through horrors and sweet dreams".

Unlike her last two albums »Folklore« and »Evermore«, on »Midnights« she again relies on electronica, synth-pop and sometimes even hip-hop-influenced beats.

The singer returns to her typical pop sound.

Swift again wrote most of the album with Jack Antonoff, lead singer of the rock band Bleachers.

"'Midnights' is a collage of intensity, highs and lows, ebb and flow," says Swift.

»Life can be dark, starry, cloudy, terrifying, electric, hot, cold, romantic or lonely.

Just like 'Midnights'.«
