SectionVideo Transcript: Climate Action - Monet painting smeared with mashed potatoesopen
No, this is not an art action.
These two people are activists from the protest group »Last Generation« who want to demonstrate for the climate by throwing a can of mashed potatoes at a painting by Claude Monet.
The protest took place on Sunday in Potsdam's Barberini Museum, where the painting "Les Meules
"
by the French impressionist hangs.
The two activists were taken into custody by the police.
According to the museum management, the picture was not damaged.
It was behind a pane of glass.
The protest action was one of many similar symbolic actions by climate protection organizations in Europe.
Nine days earlier, activists from the British group »Just Stop« had poured tomato soup over Vincent Van Gogh’s sunflower painting.
They too stuck themselves to the museum wall.
In Paris, activists from the group Extinction Rebellion taped themselves to vehicles at a car show.
The climate protests are perceived very differently online.
In addition to many supporters, there are also critics.
Attacking art doesn't send the right signal.
