Salary negotiation: Better not to come up with the inflation argument

High inflation, salary stays the same.

Some plan salary negotiations.

Using inflation as an argument is not a good idea.

When you go to the supermarket, you will feel it: everything is getting more expensive – you now have to spend significantly more for the weekly shop than you did a few months ago.

The reason for this is inflation - in September the inflation rate in Germany was around 10 percent.

This means that employees would actually have to earn around 10 percent more so that they could buy the same things as they did a few months ago.

Numerous employees are planning salary negotiations - but you should not argue with increased living costs.

Salary negotiation: That's why you shouldn't argue with inflation

You can currently buy less with your salary, but this affects all employees in the company.

Companies also have more costs – including energy costs, among other things.

At the same time, this does not mean that the company will necessarily generate more sales.

Ergo: For everyone it is currently the case that more costs have to be covered with the salary.

Therefore, inflation is a very bad argument for job interviews or salary negotiations.

Likewise, the argument "inflation" says nothing about your performance and work.

If inflation were used as an argument, there would be a wage-price spiral

According to the Kununu

platform, economists warn

that salary increases could further fuel inflation.

The reason: Higher salaries mean that companies have to raise prices again.

This in turn leads to increased costs for consumers.

This would then result in a spiral that drives inflation ever further.

Claim for inflation compensation?

If you are an employee, you are not automatically entitled to wage compensation in the event of inflation.

This means that salary increases will not come automatically - although there is a plan for an inflation compensation law.

This comes with the federal government's third relief package and is intended to relieve consumers, especially when it comes to taxes.

For example, the basic allowance will be increased.

The aim is to relieve the middle of society in particular, so that employees will have around 192 euros (net) more at their disposal a year in the coming year.

When could you get more money from inflation?

It can look different when you change jobs.

If you are currently looking for another job, then you can of course consider the inflation factor in the salary expectations.

It is not just about direct financial compensation, a job ticket for bus and train, a company car or staff discounts can also be beneficial in this case.

Reasonable arguments for salary negotiations

You should give the following reasons in a salary negotiation:

  • Achievement: Have you achieved new achievements?

  • Comparison: The salary in your industry has increased.

  • New tasks: Have you been promoted or have you taken on new tasks?

  • Further training: Have you undergone further training?

  • Experience: You have been in business for a long time and do a good job.

Otherwise, don't shy away from possible salary talks, think of sensible arguments and try again later if a conversation fails.
