According to media and agency reports, a suspension bridge collapsed in the Indian city of Morbi (Gujarat state).
According to the reports, authorities put the number of dead at at least 60. At the time of the accident, more than 150 people were apparently staying on the building.
This spans the Machchhu River.
Indian media showed images of parts of the bridge sticking out of the water and rescue teams rushing to help.
Helpers were also in boats.
According to the Times of India portal, many people were taken to hospitals.
About 100 people were injured, officials said.
Many people are still missing.
Gujarat's Interior Minister Harsh Sanghavi said more than 70 people had been rescued.
The bridge in the city of Morbi was only recently reopened after renovation work, reports the Times of India.
As a result, the structure collapsed because it could not withstand the weight of people standing on it.
“We are shocked.
An investigation is underway,” Gujarat Labor Minister Brijesh Merja told NDTV.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's office announced on Twitter that compensation would be paid to the victims' families.
