Winter time 2022: what do you do with the children when it gets dark already at five?

Parents of small children do not like winter time.

At 17:00 darkness comes, the gardens are emptied, and the parents find themselves at home, with the children, immersed in front of the screen or climbing on walls.

Winter time is coming.

On Saturday night we will all move the hands back one hour.

Although we will gain an extra hour of sleep, which is great, but for many this change brings feelings of stress or depression.

This feeling is expressed mainly among parents of small children, who often spend their time in the playground with the children until dark.

But when winter comes, at 17:00 it's already dark, the playgrounds are empty, and the parents find themselves at home, with the children, immersed in front of the screen or climbing on walls.

Early darkness is certainly not ideal, and there is nothing we can do about it, but the good news is that there are quite a few activities that can be done with the children inside and outside the house, even when it gets dark early, and they will even contribute to their development.

Here are some suggestions:

1. Allow your child to take part in household chores, for example helping to prepare dinner (cutting lettuce into small pieces with the fingers and squeezing lemon juice to season the salad), dusting tables and low shelves, taking the laundry out of the machine or dryer, and more.

These experiences will empower the child and make him feel mature and more capable.

These actions also help strengthen the shoulder girdle and fingers, practice manual work that requires coordination between the right and left hand, and practice gentle grips.

Allow children to experiment as much as possible, even if sometimes you think they are still too young.

Not only will you be amazed by their positive reactions but you will also help them improve their fine and gross motor skills.

2. Build a shelter/tent with the children under the dining room table using a sheet or blanket.

Inside the created tent you can read a book together, play with dolls or assemble Lego.

You can also play hide and seek with small children.

The very act of hiding inside the tent reduces the surrounding stimuli, contributes to a relaxing feeling and the development of the child's play abilities and imagination.

3. Take advantage of the time for joint physical activity - you can spread a mattress on the floor and play yoga cards in which each person in turn performs a yoga pose and the other has to imitate him.

You can also put rhythmic songs in the background and dance together or even play a "wheelbarrow" when you grab the child's feet and he walks with only the hands.

This activity will bring great pleasure to the child while strengthening the shoulder girdle and core muscles.

4. Creative games using dough/plasticine - it's time to take the dough or plasticine out of the drawer and create different shapes and figures together.

The act of kneading and rolling in itself causes a feeling of regulation and calmness.

5. And those who still want to take advantage of the pleasant days outside before the rain comes, can go to the garden while there is still light outside, and when it gets dark, return home with small glowing lanterns.

The very trip with the illuminating lanterns will cause the child great interest and pleasure.

The transition to winter time makes us spend more time at home, with the family.

Take advantage of the time for board games, preparing shared dinners and some kind of home and family entertainment alongside a cup of tea or warm and indulgent chocolate - it's delicious, fun and good for the heart.
