Finnish crime novels have made for many bestsellers in recent months.

With his new volume, Arttu Tuominen publishes a highly topical book.

My book tip.

An attack on a bar in Helsinki, which is mostly frequented by queer people, shakes up society.

A fanatic who calls himself "The Messenger" expresses his hatred of homosexual people in his confession video and announces further attacks.

A new case for the investigative team, in which Henrik Oksman is now the center of attention.

Arttu Tuominen "What we hide": About the book

An attack is carried out on a nightclub that queer party people like to frequent.

A fanatic, who describes himself as an "emissary" in a confession video, threw hand grenades into the nightclub.

Five people are killed and many seriously injured.

Inspector Henrik Oksman from the Kripo in Pori takes over the investigation.

However, Oksman was also in the club shortly before the attack – which nobody is allowed to know anything about.

The attack drew a lot of media attention.

The video of the confession spread like wildfire on the Internet, and the forums were overflowing with speculation as to whether the perpetrator would continue to murder.

And that's exactly what Oksman has to prevent: another attack.

Lubbe

Compared to the already exciting first volume "What we conceal", Arttu Tuominen increases the narrative pace and the tension quite a bit further.

The entire series is laid out in six volumes, each of which will focus on a different character.

The fourth volume was recently published in Finland, so it remains exciting.

If you're interested in the psychological development of the characters, you can't go wrong with Tuominen's crime stories.

The focus here is not on the blood-soaked assassination or the detailed descriptions of it.

Arttu Tuominen manages to create additional tension in the book with the individual details about the characters, which are revealed bit by bit book by book.

Putting it down is difficult.

Henrik Oksman tries to fight the loss of control over his life.

Being labeled as a homosexual colleague is gradually becoming less of a problem for him.

Much deeper lies the shame that threatens from a possible rejection by his father.

The thoughts of what outsiders think of him preoccupy him every day.

The other investigators are also not doing well on a private level.

Jari Paloviita has financial worries because he got into debt when buying a house from his father-in-law.

How long this pressure can be endured remains to be seen.

Arttu Tuominen "What we hide": My conclusion

His crime novel about radical right-wing groups and the inner struggle of the main characters is convincing.

The division of society is also a problem in Finland, which Tuominen cleverly picks up on.

Reading the exciting translation is fun despite the topic.

The anticipation for the third volume is huge.
