Rewe is now declaring war on the kebab shop owners.
The price of a doner kebab has become a symbol of high inflation in Germany.
There is hardly a kebab shop where the Germans' favorite food is still available for less than 6 euros.
The Turkish specialty often costs 7.50 euros.
In some places even more.
Has that already reached the maximum?
Questionable.
But they still exist, the cheap doner kebabs.
The supermarket chain Rewe now sells doner kebabs at particularly low prices.
Quite a few Rewe branches in Germany offer hot lunches at counters specially set up for this purpose.
Döner offers can also be found there more and more frequently (as also in the Rewe in the Weipert center in Heilbronn).
And they have it all.
In addition to other mainly meat-heavy options such as schnitzel, cordon bleu, half a grilled chicken or a currywurst, there is often a doner kebab.
And for 3.50 per serving.
That is well below the Germany-wide average for a kebab, which is currently just over 6 euros.

Anyone who thinks that Rewe might offer smaller doner kebabs than some stall owners is wrong.
But on the contrary.
The portion of feta cheese is included in the price.
Almost always costs 50 cents extra elsewhere.
Of course, many a kebab shop owner gets angry.

Many are just frustrated and angry.
A restaurant operator, who does not want to be named, grumbles: "Of course, a huge supermarket chain can offer such prices and we small shopkeepers look into the tube.
If I were to sell my doner kebab for 3.50 euros, I could close down in four weeks.”

How long Rewe will stick to the offer is unclear.
In any case, the owners of the kebab shops will lose the price war.
