Recycled friends: Disney+ surprises with a funny and kicking series Israel today

2022-11-07T12:55:30.592Z

"Reboot" by Steven Levitan ("Modern Family") provides a sarcastic and critical look at the culture of innovation that afflicts the Hollywood film and television industry • It is worth watching twice so as not to miss its jokes on you and on itself

There is no need to explain why the broadcast networks are so fond of renewing successful series from the past.

It's pretty clear why the trend is so common.

It also goes without saying that the absolute majority of these innovations fail and do not reproduce their glory days.

And yet, in the name of nostalgia and greed, this trend has not stopped.

"Reboot" (Reboot), whose first season episodes were uploaded to Disney+, is a series about such series.

She deals with the processes that take place behind the scenes in a remake of a fictitious sitcom from the beginning of the millennium ("Step Right Up") about a family with a mother, father, child and stepfather, and how the historical success is updated for the contemporary world of streaming and new cultural rules.

That fictitious series was abandoned at the time because the main actor abandoned the project in favor of a film career, and of course he has not made films since then and is mainly looking for himself - much like the other characters who live on the glory of the past.

But now, thanks to the drift of innovations to old hits, the original cast is reunited with the boomer creator and a young team that should adapt the current sitcom humor through rekindled romances, dealing with generation gaps and family troubles.

Steven Levitan, the creator of "Reboot", admitted that he thought of the idea following the unsuccessful reunion of the sitcom "Roseanne" - which crumbled on the screen after the cancellation of the main actress (Roseanne Barr) due to racist comments.

Levitan is an experienced television person and this is the first series he has created since "Modern Family" (in the past he created "Kill Me and That", and wrote for "Frasier", "Larry Sanders" and more), so his writing qualities and his ability to build a plot and characters are definitely impressive The level of the series is above average.

In addition to this, Leviathan managed to gather under him a wonderful cast of actors that includes Keegan-Michael Key ("Key and Phil"), Paul Reiser ("Crazy with Love"), Rachel Bloom ("The Crazy Ex"), Judy Greer ("Family in the disorder"), Johnny Knoxville ("Jackass") and others.

Therefore, "Reboot" is a fun, light and fluid series, which is loaded with self-criticism about an industry that lacks imagination and is obsessed with the renewal of old successes.

She runs on the gaps between the generations - from old-fashioned conservative humor to constant engagement in the cancellation culture.

It's full of meta jokes about TV, most of which will go over your head (for example, the fact that every episode is named after some series from the past), but that's its charm.

Sometimes it seems that "Reboot" (yes, that's a terrible Disney translation) tries to catch as much as possible and misses a lot.

It touches on many aspects, offends at times, scatters at times, cringe to an extent, and fails to close the plot well in the final episode of the season.

And despite everything, it's fun to watch.

Now all that remains is to cancel this series, and then bring it back in the future with a renewed and updated adaptation.
