Less funding for electric cars, more expensive insurance and new first-aid kits.

A lot will change for motorists in the new year - here is an overview

Bremen – Anyone who relies on a car in everyday life, or even wants to buy a new car, will have to dig deeper into their pockets in 2023 than they do now.

Some changes in the new year make the dream of owning a car even more distant for many, as reported by kreiszeitung.de.

Changes at a glance

  • Those born between 1959 and 1964 must exchange their pink or gray driving licenses for the credit card model by January 19, 2023.

  • From February 1, 2023, a new first aid kit must be carried

  • Car insurance costs are changing for many motorists

  • The color of the TÜV sticker changes color

  • The motorway vignette in Austria is becoming more expensive

  • The subsidy for plug-in hybrids is completely eliminated

  • Funding for purely electric cars will be reduced

The subsidy for plug-in hybrids will be completely eliminated and the subsidy for pure electric cars will be reduced

Buyers of pure electric cars will receive less support from the state from next year - the subsidy pot is to be capped.

Subsidies for plug-in hybrid vehicles are scheduled to expire at the end of this year.

A funding cap is now planned.

According to government circles, a total of 3.4 billion euros is available for the promotion of pure electric cars - 2.1 billion euros for 2023 and 1.3 billion euros for 2024.

From September 1, 2023, the funding will be limited to private individuals , companies then get nothing.

According to the ministry, funding for small businesses and non-profit organizations is still being examined.

For vehicles with a hybrid drive, the subsidy is completely eliminated.

Those born between 1959 and 1964 must exchange their pink or gray driving licenses for the credit card model by January 19, 2023.

All German driver's licenses issued before January 19, 2013 must be gradually exchanged for a new EU card driver's license in a staggered process.

By January 19, 2033, that would be around 43 million driving licenses nationwide.

Reason are EU requirements.

In the future, driving licenses should be uniform and forgery-proof throughout the EU.

In addition, all driver's licenses should be recorded in a database to prevent misuse.

For the next birth cohorts, namely from 1959 to 1964, there is a deadline of January 19, 2023. Those born between 1965 and 1970 must exchange their old driving licenses by January 19, 2024.

Then new birth cohorts follow year after year.

The last scheduled deadline is January 19, 2033. This date applies to motorists born before 1953 - as well as to drivers' licenses issued from 2012 to January 18, 2013.

Driving licenses issued after this date already comply with the new EU requirements.

The new DIN standard 13164:2022 has been in force for first-aid kits in cars since February 1, 2022.

So far, it was enough to carry two FFP2 masks in your old first aid kit.

The transition period for the new standard will end on February 1, 2023.

From then on, a standardized first-aid kit must be carried along.

The motorway vignette in Austria is becoming more expensive

Driving on Austrian motorways and expressways will be more expensive next year.

The price for the vignette will increase by 2.8 percent, announced the motorway operator ASFINAG on Monday.

The annual car vignette will cost EUR 96.40 and the ten-day vignette EUR 9.90.

The new vignette will be available in the last days of November 2022 from around 6000 ASFINAG sales partners in Germany and abroad or digitally and will be valid from 1 December 2022.

Car insurance costs are changing for many motorists

Many car owners are facing price increases from their insurers this fall.

According to estimates by the two broker portals Check24 and Verivox, the prices for existing customers in particular will increase significantly.

That could fuel competition this fall when, as usual, millions of drivers are looking for cheaper tariffs before the turn of the year.

The experts in the two companies disagree on whether and to what extent these new contracts will also become more expensive.

Verivox also expects more expensive tariffs for new customers, Check24 expects prices to fall at least for the next few weeks.

The main cause of the development is claims inflation.

The car manufacturers increase their spare parts prices every year, and cars themselves have also become considerably more expensive.

If the insurance companies do not want to slip into the red, they must also raise their prices.

In this respect, the bargain hunt this year could be different than usual: instead of cheaper contracts, drivers may be looking for policies where the price increase is limited.
