MILAN - One hundred years after the birth of Franco Zeffirelli, the La Scala theater museum celebrates its privileged relationship with the 'legendary' director who in his long career has signed some shows that have entered the history of melodrama.

From tomorrow to August 31, visitors will be able to retrace a half-century-long adventure in the exhibition 'Zeffirelli - Gli anni della Scala', curated by Vittoria Crespi Morbio.

Born in February 1923, Zeffirelli took his first steps in the Milanese theater as an assistant to Luchino Visconti, and then signed 21 shows as costume designer and director, the last of which was Aida which inaugurated the opera season on 7 December 2006 under the direction of Riccardo Chailly.

He made his debut designing the costumes of the Italian in Algiers under the direction of Corrado Pavolini on March 4, 1953, the

the year after came the first direction with La Cenerentola directed by Carlo Maria Giulini, while Il Turco in Italia with Maria Callas was in 1955.

His first inauguration broadcast on television, with the Othello directed by Carlos Kleiber on 7 December 1976, his the Cavalleria rusticana in theater and in film, the Pagliacci in a contemporary suburb, the fairytale and heavenly Turandot with Maazel, the monumental Don Carlo with Muti.

And then Traviata, Aida (in several productions, the first in 1963 with the Second Empire style sets by Lila de Nobili), Un ballo inevale.

The show that perhaps binds Zeffirelli the most to La Scala and to the history of music is La Bohème directed by Herbert von Karajan with Mirella Freni and Gianni Raimondi which was staged for the first time on January 31, 1963, and since then resumed 24 times.

A story not yet over, given that the twenty-fifth round is scheduled for next season.

The staging of the exhibition, conceived by Valentina Bellavia with graphics by Emilio Fioravanti, allows you to admire the posters, sketches, sketches, costumes and photographs and also a documentary made by Francesca Molteni with the editorial care of Mattia Palma, who is also curator of the catalog, which tells the story of Zeffirelli between the opera and the screen.
