Child benefit is to rise to 250 euros – which families can expect from January 2023

Good news for parents: In the coming year, the traffic light coalition wants to raise child benefits more than previously planned.

The cost of groceries, gas and electricity has increased.

Many parents should be all the more happy about this news: A significant increase in child benefit is in sight.

According to information from the German Press Agency (dpa), the traffic light groups agreed on Wednesday (November 9) to increase state support to a uniform monthly rate of 250 euros on January 1, 2023.

The Bundestag should vote on the new rates on Thursday (November 10th).

Child benefit should rise to 250 euros

dpa also described the plans: "For the first two children, there should be 31 euros more per month than before.

A plus of 25 euros is provided for the third child.

The rate for the fourth child should remain unchanged, it is already 250 euros per month.”

Child benefit for the first and second child is currently €219 per month.

For the third child there is 225 euros, and from the fourth child onwards the 250 euros mentioned.

The child benefit should be increased significantly.

Child benefit increase in 2023 is higher than initially planned

In the energy crisis, the traffic light wants to relieve families more than originally thought.

The dpa report on the background says that it had already been planned to raise the child benefit.

However, initially only an increase to 237 euros for the first three children was planned.

"The traffic light goes one step further when it comes to relieving families," said SPD parliamentary group leader Rolf Mützenich.

This means important additional support, especially for families with low and middle incomes. 

Child benefit is paid until the child turns 18 years old.

From the 18th birthday, child benefit is only paid under additional conditions.

The traffic light government wants to bundle various family benefits such as child benefit in a new basic child security scheme.

If Federal Family Minister Lisa Paus (Greens) has her way, the first money from this basic security should be paid out in 2025.

According to the news agency, however, nothing is known about the height.
