Bruce Springsteen has the soul.

His new album "Only the Strong Survive" has just been released, on which the "Boss" interprets classics of the genre.

Our criticism:

Anyone seriously surprised that rock musician Bruce Springsteen is now releasing a complete record of his versions of old soul classics has never been to a concert by the boss.

For decades he has been doing the encore block of his legendary performances to a large extent with indestructible soul tears.

The Soul is Bruce Springsteen's old love

Soul is an old love of Springsteen's and because he admits he's very bad at just supporting himself but his next big tour isn't due until 2023, he's now maniacally recorded some of his favorite soul hits.

The relaxed atmosphere and the enthusiasm for the recorded material can be heard on his 21st studio album, "Only the Strong Survive" (Sony).

With audible devotion, the 73-year-old immerses himself in these songs, which have accompanied him throughout his life.

And he doesn't even try to find any new creative approach: the songs are perfect, and Springsteen approaches the original sound with respect.

The pleasant sound including flattering strings, gripping wind sections and jubilant backing singers is retained.

Even when it comes to singing, Springsteen follows the revered role models, which is touching: Because of course he can't intonate as smoothly as the Temptations or the Four Tops.

But Springsteen, with his sincere verve, manages to do justice to the spirit of soul.

He throws himself into a rather idiosyncratic catalog full of verve and with a recognizable enthusiasm.

A few obvious evergreens are of course included, such as "I wish it would rain" by the Temptations or "What becomes of the Brokenhearted" by Jimmy Ruffin.

On the other hand, Springsteen has added a few overlooked jewels like "Do I love you" or "Soul Days".

to do justice to the spirit of soul.

As always, he just sang what he liked and then, in a supposedly laborious (for his producers) process, selected 15 songs that he felt somehow belong together on one album.

For the boss, the soul works are the legitimate continuation of the "Great American Songbook".

You have to know that soul, especially from the successful Motown factory, has often been criticized for being too commercial, smooth and too adapted to the white mass taste.

Springsteen sees it differently and interprets the old hits in terms of standards that work across generations.

And they do.

The whiners of yore are long gone, the songs are still there, and one can predict that even younger earthlings who don't know the titles will fall under the spell,

when they put the record on or click on their playlist.

Although: It's nice to put this LP on a turntable, like you used to do in the past.

When listening through, the album unfolds a pull and a magic that is otherwise not possible.

But only marginally.

Only the Strong Survive is Springsteen's 21st studio album

Springsteen pays homage to the golden soul era of the 1960s, with the exception of the Commodores' runaway "Nightshift" from 1985, which fits perfectly as a homage to those golden days and is basically the leitmotif of this work: "Gonna be some sweet sounds coming down." “.

A cover album by the great songwriter Bruce Springsteen may sound like a paradox, but it's actually the man opening his treasure chest and showing what inspired him to write his own songs.

It was these mini dramas with their opulent sound that nonchalantly ignored genre boundaries.

So in a way, this is one of the most essential Springsteen albums.
