Is clothing with discount store logos now becoming the new status symbol?

On Thursday, a Twitter user shared a picture of the Lidl sweater and comments were not long in coming.

"Are these actually for sale?" one commenter asked in disbelief, and another admitted, "We bought some!" That might not have been a bad idea from an economic point of view, as resale values ​​have recently quadrupled.

The Christmas sweater is already sold out in the Lidl online shop (as of November 18th) and it is also already sold out in many branches.

"If you took it with you, it's over the counter on eBay for 39 euros instead of 6.99," commented a user in the Twitter discussion about the sweater.

"There are things I don't want to earn my money with," replied the user whose post sparked the discussion.

On average, resourceful Lidl customers offered the Christmas jumper on eBay classifieds (as of November 18) for 29 euros, which would be about four times the original price.

Clothing with cheap supermarket logos is probably not a status symbol.

Rather, fashion experts assume that irony plays a role and that wearers want to use it to express nonchalance.

That also explains why the fashion brand Balenciaga released a bag that looks like a blue garbage bag - but cost around 1,800 euros.

Even Lidl apparently means the sweater ironically, at least that's what the description indicates: "Funny logo Christmas motifs," it says.

For some, the love of discounters goes beyond wearing Christmas jumpers with Lidl or Aldi logos.

In the United States, a couple tied the knot in an Aldi branch last week.
