In autumn, many garden fans wonder when they should mow the lawn for the last time before winter.

A rule of thumb determines the right time.

Winter is fast approaching and with it the “last times” for garden owners.

So that the property can bloom and thrive in all its splendor again in spring, the plants - and especially the lawn - should be prepared accordingly for the cold months.

By the way: A bit of "laziness" on the part of the gardener can be at work here, which is a blessing for many animals.

Mowing the lawn: The best time for the last cut

Unlike many other plants in the garden, which have almost gone into hibernation, the lawn continues to grow in the fall.

A good bit slower than in spring and summer, but steadily.

Only when it gets really cold at night do the stalks go into their well-deserved hibernation.

Even in autumn, the lawn is still growing and should be mowed.

For this very reason, there is no fixed date for the last lawn cut.

Depending on the weather, mowing will take place in November.

The rule of thumb here is: As long as the lawn grows, it will also be mowed.

Gardeners can stop mowing well after the first frosty nights.

The last lawn cut: what should you pay attention to?

To ensure that the lawn survives the winter well, there are a few tips that garden owners should keep in mind:

  • Shorten to a maximum of four centimeters.

The protection against the cold suffers as a result, and snow could press the stalks together too much and thus provide the best conditions for fungi and pathogens.

  • Only mow dry grass.

If it has rained and the grass is soaked, you should not cut the grass.

  • Remove clippings.

Just like leaves, do not leave the lawn residue lying on the stalks, but sweep them up well and dispose of them accordingly.

At the low temperatures, the cut stalks do not rot properly and can promote diseases, fungi and moss.

When disposing of them, however, make sure not to disturb hedgehogs in their winter quarters, for example.

  • Do not enter - at least roughly an hour before mowing, you should not walk around on the lawn.

This allows the culms to straighten up and then be neatly shortened.
