China has reported three Covid-19-related deaths, the first in the past six months, as Beijing's cases surged to a record high of nearly 1,000 out of a nationwide total of just over 26,000.

Three people died in the capital over the weekend despite a strict 'zero-Covid' policy: Beijing reported 962 new infections (largely outside quarantine areas) compared to 621 on Saturday.

The National Health Commission said it recorded 26,824 local cases nationwide on Sunday, approaching April's peaks, at the height of the crisis in Shanghai.
