Oatmeal is good – but not all varieties.

Öko-Test found out that some brands contain substances that are very harmful to health.

Munich - Healthy oatmeal for breakfast?

How about adding heavy metals and mold to it?

Öko-Test has discovered frightening things about some brands that can be bought from Edeka, Lidl and Co.

Öko-Test examined 29 brands, 16 of which were organic products.

18 of them were able to shine with the grade "very good".

But four oatmeal brands failed completely with the grade "insufficient".

Pollutants have been found in them that can even be carcinogenic.

There are huge price differences for the flakes: the testers spent between 69 cents and 3.29 euros for 500 grams.

Interestingly, according to the test results from November 12, 2022, the two price extremes each received the best mark.

Nickel and mold in oatmeal - they can be carcinogenic

The products have been tested for exposure to heavy metals (nickel, cadmium, lead and arsenic) and mineral oil.

The staggering result: Two brands were so heavily contaminated with nickel that an adult weighing 60 kilograms exceeds the currently valid daily intake (TDI) with just a 50 gram portion.

But that's not all: mold has also been detected in some products.

The laboratory detected the spray poison glyphosate in four brands.

Avoid these oats at all costs: According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), glyphosate is “probably carcinogenic”.

So which products should consumers avoid?

The following oatmeal scored the worst in the Öko-Test:

  • Golden Breakfast oatmeal (“insufficient”)

  • Yes!

    Crunchy rolled oats (“insufficient”)

  • Crunchy oatmeal every day (“insufficient”)

  • Crunchy oat flakes (“insufficient”)

The same goes for the “Golden Breakfast Oatmeal” from Norma – but the chain has already withdrawn it from sale for that reason.
