2022-11-21T16:13:51.979Z

The magnitude 5.6 quake took place about a hundred kilometers from Jakarta, the capital of the archipelago. The victims kept coming

At least 56 people died and hundreds more were injured in a 5.6 magnitude earthquake on the Indonesian island of Java on Monday that shook skyscrapers as far away as the capital Jakarta.

"Due to the large number of people still stranded there, we estimate that the number of dead and injured people will increase," added Ridwan Kamil, the governor of West Java province.

Residents transported the victims to the hospital in pick-ups and motorcycles.

The bodies of those who had died were placed in front of the establishment, under a tarpaulin.

Sayang Hospital in Cianjur has had no access to electricity since the earthquake, making it impossible for doctors to operate on victims.

“We are currently caring for people who are in emergency situations in this hospital.

Ambulances continue to arrive at the hospital from the villages”, described Herman Suherman, head of the administration of the city of Cianjur.

Mexico hit by a violent earthquake, for the 3rd time on September 19

In 2006, the island of Java was hit by a magnitude 6.3 earthquake near the city of Yogyakarta (center), causing around 6,000 deaths and tens of thousands of injuries.

But the country remains marked by the earthquake of December 26, 2004 with a magnitude of 9.1 off the coast of Sumatra.

It caused a major tsunami that killed 220,000 people across the region, including 170,000 in Indonesia alone, one of the deadliest natural disasters ever recorded.
