16 years ago Bruce Springsteen released the covers album "We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions" • Now he reproduces the formula and releases the album "Only the Strong Survive", which is a feast for the ears

In 2006, Bruce Springsteen released an album without original material for the first time in his career.

"We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions" was composed of 13 folk songs made accessible to the general public by Peter Seeger, which received a new treatment by Springsteen, and by all accounts it was a great success.

The reviews raved, the listeners were happy, songs that time had forgotten were revived, and the album earned him a Grammy Award.

Now, a little more than a decade and a half after that brilliance, the musician from New Jersey releases "Only the Strong Survive", another covers album in the same concept, and it won't really surprise anyone to find out that the formula that worked 16 years ago continues to be effective even today.

This is an album that is a feast for the ears.

Springsteen here pays tribute to the soul songs that helped shape the rock'n'roll he is so identified with, and the treatment he gives here to the classics of the genre shows respect, appreciation and above all tremendous love.

The album's theme song is an uplifting and hopeful track.

Also "Soul Days" which comes after it is the song "Phil Good" led by a brass instrument that suits the hoarse voice of the 73-year-old singer, as well as "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore" and "Hey, Western Union Man".

In general, all the songs here are richly produced and full of layers, even the subtle ones like the exciting "Nightshift".

The point is that Bruce and his Island Street Band chose not to give new interpretations to the old songs, as many feel they have to do when they come to renew works of the past, but to simply perform them in the most energetic, enthusiastic and lively way they could.

There are those who will see the project as nothing more than karaoke versions of 15 soul hits, and this is a not entirely inaccurate way of seeing it, but it also misses a lot of the beauty and charm that is here, in an album of songs that will lift the mood even for the depressed among the listeners.
