The date of the award ceremony has not yet been set, but one thing is clear: the American director, producer and screenwriter Steven Spielberg is to receive the Honorary Golden Bear at the 73rd Berlinale
received for his life's work.
The film festival also dedicates the
Hommage series to him,
which runs out of competition, and shows his latest work »The Fabelmans« in the Berlinale Palast.
Multiple Oscar winner Spielberg, 75, is one of the world's most renowned filmmakers.
With Jaws, Spielberg invented the summer blockbuster genre.
Box office hits like »ET«, the »Indian Jones« series or »Jurassic Park« followed.
Spielberg also reached a mass audience with serious material such as »Schindler's List«.
Overall, his work includes over 100 films and series.
It's not the director's first major award.
In 1998 he was awarded the Grand Cross of Merit with a Star of the Federal Republic of Germany for the Shoah Foundation he founded and for the film »Schindler's List«.
In 2001 Queen Elizabeth II made him a
Knight Commander of the British Empire
.
In 2015 he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom
from then US President Barack Obama
.
In his latest film »The Fabelmans«, Steven Spielberg tells part of his own family history.
It won the audience award at the 47th Toronto Film Festival.
This is considered an indicator of which films will later be well received at the Oscars.
In Germany, »The Fabelmans« will be released in cinemas on March 9, 2023.
