(ANSA) - BEIJING, NOVEMBER 22 - The outbreaks of Covid-19 in Beijing are worsening where 1,438 infections were ascertained on Monday, almost 500 more than the previous day, which equals the new record for the Chinese capital.
From the daily updates of the National Health Commission, almost 28,000 new cases of local transmission have emerged (2,000 more than on Sunday), with the province of Guangdong (over 16,000 infections) and the megalopolis of Chongqing (6,300 cases) which are confirmed as the most critical areas, while there are two more deaths that bring the total to 5,231.
In Chaoyang, the central district of Beijing with 3.7 million residents, almost all department stores, restaurants and shops have been closed, while traffic is reduced, in line with the recommendation of local authorities not to leave the house, except for need.
The latest pandemic spiral is testing the limits of the revised 'zero tolerance', with officials eager to avoid citywide lockdowns like the two-month ordeal experienced in Shanghai in April and May, which ruined the economy and the international image of the financial hub.
The Chinese capital has so far avoided a total closure, in favor of targeted blocks.
