How to eliminate – and prevent – odors.

In the bathroom, it's not just the washing machine that causes one or the other odor problem.

Even tumble dryers can start to stink over time - even though the dryer doesn't even come into contact with foul-smelling dirty laundry.

What is the reason?

Why does the tumble dryer stink?

The cause of a smelly dryer is usually leftover condensation that can collect in various places in the appliance.

But other types of soiling are also not entirely innocent if we can only wrinkle our noses when removing the freshly dried items of clothing:

  • Dryer door: Do you close the door after each dryer run?

    That's not a good idea.

Lots of condensation accumulates in tumble dryers, which quickly leads to mold growth when the door is closed.

Therefore, as with the washing machine, always leave the door slightly open so that the liquid can escape.

  • Condensate container: Most tumble dryers have a water container that collects the condensation that occurs.

If the container is not emptied quickly, it can start to smell.

  • Condensing unit: Condensing and heat pump dryers have a condensing unit or heat exchanger that accumulates a lot of lint over time - and that creates bad smells.

Clean the area from time to time.

The units can often even be removed from the dryer and simply rinsed off with a hand shower.

  • Fluff filter: All sorts of fibers and dirt accumulate in the lint filter - a veritable feast for bacteria!

Over time, this can create a musty smell, which is why you should clean the lint filter after every drying cycle.

But that's not the only reason: a full fluff filter also increases the risk of fire.

  • Dryer drum: Even the drum itself is not spared from dirt and limescale deposits.

Occasionally clean the dryer drum with diluted vinegar or a dash of citric acid.

Then wipe with water - done!

In this way, the moisture sensors remain functional.

By the way: Many tumble dryers no longer live up to their reputation as energy guzzlers in the household.

Heat pump dryers only use a fraction of the energy that was previously needed to dry laundry.

Nevertheless, a few simple tips can help to save electricity with the dryer.

Or you can dry your laundry on the drying rack outside - this is even possible in winter.
