The Swedish sculptor, stage designer and author Gunilla Palmstierna-Weiss died in Stockholm at the age of 94.
This was announced by the Berlin criminal publishing house.
Just a few weeks ago, Palmstierna-Weiss presented the German version of her memoirs A European Woman at the Berlin Literature Festival.
Cooperation with Ingmar Bergmann
The artist grew up in Austria, Sweden and the Netherlands.
She worked as an illustrator, as a ceramist she created several works of art on buildings in Sweden and as a stage designer she designed stage spaces all over the world.
Between 1966 and 1989 she worked on several occasions with the Swedish director Ingmar Bergman and the British theater director Peter Brook.
Gunilla Palmstierna-Weiss was married to the German-Swedish author, playwright, painter and filmmaker Peter Weiss from 1964 until his death in 1982.
She acted in his films and designed sets and costumes for his dramas.
After Weiss' death, she became the writer's most important estate administrator.
Palmstierna-Weiss was also politically involved as a feminist and activist, for example on the subject of abortion, but did not see herself as a pioneer.
Her memoirs were published in Sweden in 2013 under the title "Minnets spelplats" and in Germany in September 2022 under the title "A European Woman".
