Proper heating saves valuable energy and money.

It makes sense to also calculate alternatives to heating.

We will show you here whether it is worth buying electric blankets and fans on Black Friday.

Munich ‒ Not heating at all is not a solution for most people.

Even when you look at the current gas and electricity prices from suppliers – nobody wants to sit out in the cold in winter.

Especially not in your own four walls.

But how do consumers keep their homes cozy and warm in these hard times, when the energy crisis, high inflation and skyrocketing food prices are increasingly burdening many consumers and presenting them with financial challenges.

It can also be done electrically, says Stiftung Warentest and has now calculated the costs for five types of electric heaters for the first time.

Fan heaters, air conditioners, radiators and convectors as well as electric blankets come into consideration.

The costs for the devices were calculated for a running time of four hours with a maximum heating output of 2000 watts, depending on the heater.

This roughly corresponds to the duration of a cozy evening in front of the TV.

Comparison of electric heaters:

  • Electric blankets are the cheapest with electricity costs of 50 euros

  • Air conditioning about 150 euros in the heating season

  • Fan heater - seasonal consumption at around 490 euros

  • Radiators and convectors - seasonal consumption at around 490 euros

  • Infrared heating - acquisition costs from 100 euros upwards, high power consumption

Black Friday Deals: A cost comparison of electric heaters

According to consumer advocates, the cheapest option is the

electric heating blanket

, which consumes three cents an hour.

That's about 50 euros in six months.

An electric blanket costs around 50 euros.

Air conditioning came

in second

at 20 cents per hour, which, according to Stiftung Warentest, corresponds to costs of around 150 euros for the current heating season.

However, an investment is not exactly cheap and costs 1000 to 2000 euros.

Consumers also need professionals for installation and maintenance.

The

infrared

heater consumes 34 cents per hour, but only warms one person.

The acquisition costs for a chic model start at 100 euros.

The advantage of such a heater is that the heat acts directly where the radiation hits the body.

If you only want heat in a certain place, you can position the radiant heater accordingly, which "reduces power consumption", according to the testers in their consumer assessment.

Black Friday deals: Fan heaters, radiators and convectors are the most expensive alternatives to heating

At 70 cents per hour for electricity, convectors, oil radiators and fan heaters are the most expensive devices in the bunch.

According to the tester, this makes a seasonal consumption of 490 euros.

You can get a convector or an oil radiator from 80 euros;

they work quietly and generate a pleasant warmth.

A reasonable fan heater is already available from 50 euros.

However, consumers should not let the latter run for four hours, otherwise it can quickly overheat, the testers warn.

The clear advantage of fan heaters: they heat up immediately after being switched on and are particularly good for small rooms such as the bathroom.

Black Friday deals: This is another way to save – set the heating system correctly

If these alternatives to heating with gas are not convincing, or if the costs do not seem attractive enough, you should consider a few essential tips when heating.

Because every degree less reduces heating costs by around six percent.

Not all rooms have to be heated equally.

Current guidelines are 20 to 22 degrees in the living room, 18 to 20 in the kitchen, 23 degrees in the bathroom and 16 to 18 in the bedroom.

In the end, it really doesn't matter which devices are used to heat the apartment.

    Could you believe.

The best opportunities to drastically reduce heating costs "are usually offered by the thermal insulation of the roof and facade and the choice of a modern heating system," the consumer advocates recommend to tenants and landlords.

Homeowners can save a lot of gas by investing in thermal insulation and a large solar thermal system.

But above all, the correct setting of the heating system helps to reduce energy consumption.

Even in rented apartments, where the heating and hot water technology is specified by the landlord, a lot can be saved with the correct setting of the heating.
