Despite a clinical suspicion that it is a rare pathogen called Microsporidium, no hospital has been able to prove the diagnosis because there are no adequate methods for this pathogen.
Dr. Denise Weinstein, a cornea and cataract specialist in the ophthalmology department at Hadassah Ein Kerem, was among the first to identify the symptoms that the Ministry of Health had warned about, among a number of patients who came to the eye clinic at the hospital.

After samples were taken from their eyes and transferred to the clinical microbiology laboratory at the hospital, the laboratory team led by Prof. Kobi Moran-Gilad performed a diagnosis using advanced sequencing methods in collaboration with several parties, including the sequencing unit in the genetics department at Hadassah.
In one and the first case - the generator was definitely identified.
In the laboratory they were proud of the findings and said that this was an achievement and explained that for the first time since they began to report in hospitals across the country about keratitis suspected to be an infectious disease, there is an unequivocal answer and confirmation as to the cause of the disease.
