A six-year-old boy endured 40 hours under rubble and rubble: just two days after the devastating earthquake in Indonesia, the child was rescued from a collapsed house.

The boy was found on Wednesday morning (local time) in the most affected city of Cianjur, said a firefighter involved in the operation.

The child was still breathing and was treated immediately.

The 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck Monday about 70 kilometers southeast of the capital Jakarta at a depth of ten kilometers.

The epicenter was near the town of Cianjur.

Numerous people were killed by collapsing buildings, but also by landslides.

The situation was made worse by a wave of more than 60 smaller aftershocks of magnitudes 1.8 to 4 in the 175,000-resident city of Cianjur, as reported by AFP.

According to the National Civil Protection Service, many children who visited mosques after school were among the 268 dead.

The search work in the affected areas continued on Wednesday, more than 150 people were still missing.

More than a thousand people were injured in the accident.

President Joko Widodo traveled to the scene of the accident on Tuesday and promised compensation to those affected.

World leaders expressed their condolences to the victims.

Indonesia has around 270 million inhabitants, more than half of whom live on the main island of Java.

The island nation lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, the most geologically active zone on earth.

Earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are common there.

The 9.1 magnitude earthquake that struck off the coast of Sumatra on December 26, 2004 lingers in horrific memories.

The resulting tsunami killed 220,000 people across the region, 170,000 of them in Indonesia alone.
