Damascus, SANA- To solve the problem of the accumulation of non-biodegradable plastic containers and waste that filled agricultural lands

Damascus-SANA

To solve the problem of the accumulation of non-biodegradable plastic packaging and waste that filled agricultural lands, rivers and beaches, and in the absence of a culture of recycling, a student in the Department of Mechanical Engineering (Textile Industries) at the University of Damascus, Muayad Shahrour, designed and implemented a polyester refining device.

Shahrour explained to SANA that the idea of his project is based on designing and implementing a device for producing polyester filaments from plastic waste (PET), which are used in the manufacture of many important and basic products, such as the production of yarns, non-woven fabrics, sound and thermal insulation materials, appliances, sports equipment, and furniture.

Regarding the stages that polyester yarn production goes through, Shahrour explained that the process begins with collecting and sorting the packages, washing, drying and breaking them, then to the melting stage and pushed through a feed spiral to the extruder, and formed into continuous or intermittent filaments according to the device settings with different measurements and very high productivity, including It matches the desired product category.

As for the difficulties that faced the project, Shahrour pointed out that it was mainly represented by the absence of financial support for its implementation, which prompted him to self-finance it and implement an experimental model that gave the desired results, hoping that he would be able to fully design it to actually enter the labor market, which provides additional job opportunities that include work in all its stages. .

For his part, Dr. Taher Qadar, Head of the Department of Textile Industries Mechanics Engineering and Technologies at the Faculty of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering at Damascus University, indicated that the project provides a raw material that replaces the imported ones at a low price, based on semi-free resources (waste and plastic waste), and provides added value when converted into one of the products that It is involved in its manufacture as a raw material, and thus obtaining high profits, pointing to the importance of the project in achieving environmental sustainability, and finding an economic solution to the problem of the accumulation of non-biodegradable plastic waste, to convert it into a product of high value and high quality, which is used in many industries.

The project entitled (Design and Implementation of the Polyester Refining Device) participated in the exhibition of the Faculty of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering for projects, which was held last month at the University of Damascus, with the participation of 195 projects from Syrian public and private universities.
