The Ministry of Education has announced the opening of participation for students of various academic levels in the seventh edition of the Arab Reading Challenge initiative for the year 2022-2023, which was launched by the United Arab Emirates.

The challenge takes the form of a competition for reading in Arabic, in which students from the first grade of elementary school until the third secondary school participate, during which the participating students progress through five stages, each stage includes reading ten books and summarizing them, and after completing the reading and summarizing, the qualifying stages begin according to standards approved at the level of schools and educational areas. Then at the level of the Arab countries, up to the final qualifiers, which are held annually in Dubai.

During a virtual meeting with directors of education and coordinators of the initiative in the governorates, the Minister of Education, Dr. Darem Tabbaa, confirmed that Syria's obtaining the title of Arab Reading Challenge Champion for the sixth season is considered a success for all workers in the Ministry of Education, including students, teachers, supervisors, school principals, and coordinators of the competition, indicating that the aim of the competition is to promote Interest in reading to highlight students' abilities and skills.

Minister Tabbaa indicated that the ministry in the seventh season will focus on expanding participation to include various schools to encourage all students to read, by developing a plan to avoid all the difficulties that arose during participation in the last season, such as the lack of books and their lack of access to remote areas in some governorates.

Minister Tabbaa focused on the need to pay attention to the development of the school library and to work on launching the electronic library project and securing the Internet for each school to facilitate students’ access to books, benefit from computer laboratories, and secure digital reference books that help develop youth thinking in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture and the Arab Writers Union.

In turn, Ali Al-Abbas, the general coordinator of the initiative in Syria, in its seventh season, stressed the importance of focusing on the participation of all schools through a plan developed to encourage all students to participate in order to develop their reading skills and focus on activating the work of the coordinators to reach an advanced stage in the competition this season as well, indicating the importance of diversity in reading. which is considered one of the pillars of success.

During the meeting, the challenges and the mechanism for overcoming them were reviewed, and the views of education directors and competition coordinators in the governorates were heard about the preparations for the seventh season.
