(ANSA) - ROME, NOVEMBER 24 - The City Council of Odessa has decided to demolish the monument to Catherine II of Russia.
The administration itself gave the news: "At the meeting of the executive committee of the Odessa city council, the decision on the dismantling and transfer of the monument to the founders of Odessa with Catherine II was supported", reports Espreso TV.
In an online referendum last month, residents voted for its demolition as Catherine, Empress of Russia and founder of the city, is now seen as a symbol of Moscow's oppression and war.
In recent months the monument has been vandalized several times.
