With the gas and electricity price brake, the traffic light coalition wants to relieve the burden on citizens.

The first funds should flow in December.

Munich – The government wants to pay the one-time relief payment for consumers and companies in December.

The electricity price brake comes in January, the gas price brake will flow from March next year.

That's the plan.

According to the government, the energy price brakes should apply until April 30, 2024.

The federal government has budgeted 200 billion euros to cushion the skyrocketing energy prices for citizens by 2024.

For

gas customers

, this means in concrete terms that they do not have to pay a deduction to their energy supplier in December.

If you do pay something, your advance payment will be settled in January.

This emergency aid is a one-time payment to bridge the period up to the gas price brake, the federal government announced.

In addition to private households, commercial companies are also entitled to claim.

According to the Handelsblatt

, your consumption should not exceed 1,500 kilowatt hours

.

No immediate payment is planned for electricity customers in

December

.

For them, the price brake will start as early as January 2023.

Energy price brakes: How does the gas price brake work?

Gas consumers will receive a credit on their monthly bill from March.

Households are to receive a guaranteed gross gas price of 12 cents per kilowatt hour for 80 percent of their current consumption.

The contract price should apply to the remaining 20 percent of consumption.

For district heating, the guaranteed gross price should be 9.5 cents.

Until now, the consumer paid

a price of seven cents per kWh for a

consumption of 15,000 kilowatt hours .

After the price increase, a price of 30 cents per kWh now applies.

With the gas price brake, the customer receives a subsidized price of 18 cents (30 cents minus 12 cents) for 12,000 kWh (80% of 15,000 kWh) and thus a

credit of 2160 euros per year

or 180 euros per month.

The government hopes that the price brake will give consumers an incentive to save.

Because the credit is dependent on the consumer of the past and not on the current energy consumption, reports the

Handelsblatt

.

Households can therefore save more money by reducing their future consumption, since the credit should not change.

So that households with low income and low consumption are not worse off than villa owners with high consumption when it comes to the gas price brake, private consumers should be able to tax the aid as a benefit in kind.

According to Economics Minister Robert Habeck, this income limit should be around 75,000 euros.

Energy price brakes: When will the electricity price brake come?

From January 1, 2023, the electricity price brake is intended to help reduce electricity costs overall.

“The electricity price for private consumers and small and medium-sized companies is therefore capped at 40 cents per kilowatt hour.

This applies to the basic requirement of 80 percent of the previous year's consumption," the federal government promises on its website.

However, critics consider the start date to be extremely ambitious.

From the point of view of the Federal Association of the Energy Industry, it is not possible for more than 40 million households at the turn of the year.

Nevertheless, consumers receive a

credit

on their electricity bill .

This is based on

80 percent of your previous consumption.

The gross price for a kilowatt hour of electricity is to be reduced to

40 cents

.

A two-person household consumes around 3196 kWh per year.

At an average electricity price of 32.87 cents per kWh, that makes a total of 1050 euros.

The

price cap of the electricity price brake

will apply in the future up to a consumption of 2557 kWh.

In the future, a maximum of 40 cents per kWh will be charged for this.

This corresponds to an

annual electricity price of 1023 euros.

The credit is processed via the

billing by the electricity supplier

and can be viewed directly by the electricity customer on the bill.

In addition, as a further relief, the government plans to keep the network charges at the previous year's level.

Energy price brakes: Bundestag and Bundesrat still have to vote

The overall solution for the electricity and gas price brake is to be approved by the cabinet on November 18th and decided by the Bundestag on December 2nd.

The Federal Council is scheduled to vote on December 16th.

The brakes should take effect as early as December 1st.

According to the Handelsblatt

, 30 billion euros from the so-called economic

stabilization fund are to be used for the measures in the electricity sector .

The government is planning 8.9 billion euros for the December immediate surcharge for gas.

The gas price brake should cost 51 billion euros.

Between 66 and 82 billion euros are to be paid for the electricity price brake and the stabilization of grid fees.

According to the

dpa

, there should also be a hardship fund of twelve billion euros for consumers and small companies who are not relieved enough by the price brakes.

In addition, so-called “random profits” from energy producers are to be skimmed off to finance the energy price brakes.
