The gas price brake will not take effect until March, but will apply retrospectively from January 2023.
What relief does this mean for which household?
The gas price brake is not supposed to come into force until March 1st.
However, the cabinet plans for the relief to apply retrospectively to the same extent for January and February 2023.
The comparison portal Verivox explains what the change means for consumers in concrete terms.
"For a household in a single-family house with an annual consumption of 20,000 kWh, this means an additional saving of around 154 euros per year.
"For singles (5,000 kWh), the additional savings amount to 38 euros, a couple household (12,000 kWh) saves an additional 93 euros," says the statement.

According to Verivox, if 80 percent of the basic consumption is capped at 12 cents per kWh, the gas bill drops “to 2,632 euros at the current market prices” – “this corresponds to a reduction of 926 euros per year (26 percent).
A two-person household (12,000 kWh) pays around 556 euros less, a single household saves around 232 euros.”

In December there is also a one-off emergency aid for gas and district heating customers.
You are then not obliged to pay advance payments.
"Nevertheless, amounts paid must be offset by energy suppliers in the next invoice," reported the German Press Agency (dpa) on the subject.
Regarding the one-time relief planned for December 2022, Verivox said: "Based on the current market prices, the average down payment for a single-family home is currently around 297 euros." which corresponds to a “relief of around 8 percent”.
