(ANSA) - TEL AVIV, NOVEMBER 25 - The controversial radical right-wing leader Itamar Ben Gvir will be minister of national security in the next government led by prime minister Benyamin Netanyahu.

'Otzma Yehudit' (Jewish Power) - BenGvir's party - and the Likud have in fact reached an agreement in this sense which has unblocked the negotiations.

Ben Gvir had already asked for the Minister of Public Security before the vote on 1 November and has now obtained the new department which provides for broader powers than the previous one.

In addition to this position, Ben Gvir's party - whose ideas refer to the racist rabbi Meir Kahane, outlawed by Israel - will have two other departments (newly formed): that of the 'Development of the Negev (region in the south of the country) and of Galilee ' (north) and the other named '

Jewish heritage'.

Among the powers of the minister of national security is the control of the Israeli border police in the West Bank, with more than 2,000 soldiers who have, among other things, the task of dealing with unrest, making arrests and evacuating illegal Jewish settlements in the Palestinian territories.

All tasks that were previously under the direct command of the Army Central Command.

Ben Gvir - who recently said he has moderated - is a supporter of Israel's annexation of the West Bank.

In the negotiations for the government, Netanyahu has not yet resolved the differences with the other radical right-wing leader Bezalel Smotrich, head of 'Religious Zionism' who in past elections sided with Ben Gvir.
