(ANSA) - MILAN, NOVEMBER 25 - Romano, 82 years old, of Tuscan origins and a resident of Peschiera Borromeo, in the Milanese area, died in a Swiss clinic with assisted suicide, accompanied in the Swiss country by Marco Cappato.

The 82-year-old daughter, Francesca, gave the news in a video in which she explained that she "would have liked to die at home surrounded by her loved ones".

Tomorrow, the treasurer of the Luca Coscioni Association will report himself once again in Milan and risk "again up to 12 years in prison".

Cappato said: "It is unworthy for a civilized country to continue to tolerate the exile of death and clandestinity".

"My dad has just confirmed the choice to die - explained his daughter Francesca -. I came from California to be here with him these days. In California, the choice my dad made is legal and, in the case of an illness like yours could have chosen to die at home, surrounded by loved ones and family."

Romano, 82 years old, of Tuscan origins and resident in Peschiera Borromeo, suffering from atypical Parkinsonism since 2020, was not kept alive by life support treatments.

A former journalist and advertiser, he had been bedridden by illness, amidst "severe muscle pain, in an irreversible condition that prevented him from reading, writing and doing anything independently".

After having matured, explains the LucaCoscioni Association, "the choice of wanting to end his suffering and realizing the impossibility of proceeding in Italy, he asked Marco Cappato for help to reach Switzerland and avoid legal consequences for his family members".
