Taiwanese leader Tsai Ing-wen has resigned as head of the ruling party following her defeat in local elections today against the pro-Chinese opposition. "The results of the elections were not as expected... (ANSA)


(ANSA) - TAIPEI, NOVEMBER 26 - Taiwan's leader Tsai Ing-wen has resigned as head of the ruling party after the defeat suffered today in local elections against the pro-Chinese opposition.

"The election results were not as expected ... I have to take full responsibility and I am stepping down immediately as party chairman," she told reporters.

Tsai will still remain president of the island.
