Strange Fiasco for
Avalonia, The Strange Journey
.
The latest animated film from Walt Disney Studios is not arousing enthusiasm, less than a week after its (almost) worldwide release.
The production, titled
Strange Worlds
in its original version, earned only $18.6 million in the United States the day after its opening weekend, a far cry from the estimated $30 to 40 million.
Either a remarkable counter-performance in the middle of Thanksgiving, a period usually conducive, in America at least, to family cinema trips.
Public disinterest in adventure and science fiction films was not limited to the United States.
Released on November 23 in theaters in 43 countries,
Avalonia
only earned a total of $27.8 million internationally.
This abysmal start seems to announce substantial losses for Disney, at least 100 million dollars (96 million euros) according to the specialized press.
Avalonia, the strange journey
had benefited from a budget of 180 million dollars.

A poor performance
Across the Atlantic, the latest from Walt Disney Animation suffered in particular from half-hearted reviews and an almost complete lack of impact on the public.
The studio's last feature films had, by comparison, caused a sensation by surfing on a catchy song (
We Don't Talk About Bruno
, for
Encanto
, in 2021) or by being part of the continuity of an already established universe (
La Frozen 2
, in 2019).
Also released last year,
Raya and the Last Dragon
had for its part benefited from a simultaneous release on Disney +.

This is also what awaits
Avalonia, the strange journey
, for its French release.
Deprived of distribution in French theaters, the film will only be available in France “soon”, that is to say from its inclusion in the catalog of the digital platform Disney +.
According to the current media timeline, the feature film could not be released on Disney's service until 17 months after its broadcast.
A delay deemed too long by the American company, which preferred to focus on its digital strike force and thus dispense with a theatrical release.
The Marvel
blockbuster Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
continued to top the US box office by far for the third consecutive weekend.
Faced with the 18.6 million of
Avalonia
, the new part of the endless superheroic cycle raised an additional 64 million dollars in the United States, for total receipts to date estimated at 675 million dollars.
