"I thought I'd end it": Cara Delevingne talks about her past suicidal thoughts

2022-11-29T13:03:27.491Z

The 30-year-old British model said in an interview with the Mirror that she had suffered from "internalized homophobia" in the past. Making her Planet Sex documentary saved her life, she says.

Her sexuality has long been a burden, to the point of making her suicidal.

But today, Cara Delevingne says she is happier than ever.

Directing her new series

Planet Sex

, which explores issues of sexuality and gender, “has made [her] want to speak louder about what [she] believes in.

It's time to stop hiding,” the 30-year-old model told the

Mirror

on November 27.

And to insist: “It really changed my life.

I am now happier than I have ever been.

I'm really, really proud of what we've created."

“I thought I was abnormal”

The British supermodel opened up about her suffering related to her homosexuality during her teenage years.

"I couldn't tell anyone about it.

I had a lot of internalized homophobia and shame.

I thought I was abnormal."

Worse still, the youngest of Chloé and Poppy Delevingne thought “several times to end her life”.

She continued: "I'm so glad I didn't because if I can help another child it means a lot to me.

It means everything to the homosexual teenager that I was.

In an interview for Esquire

magazine

in 2016, the model had already opened up about her suicidal thoughts.

"I didn't want to exist anymore.

I wanted every molecule in my body to disintegrate.

I wanted to die," she said.

“I was running in the woods and smoking a pack of cigarettes, then I was smashing my head against a tree because I just wanted to knock myself out,” she continued, before qualifying the seriousness of her condition by saying that even so, "She didn't cut herself."

More women than men

Today, Cara Delevingne feels better in her sneakers.

And overcame the difficulty she had as a teenager in assuming her bisexuality.

The 30-year-old has had several long relationships with women.

This summer, she was spotted in Italy, exchanging a kiss with British musician Minke, with whom she is now said to be in a relationship.

As a reminder, Cara Delevingne got married to Ashley Benson (the interpreter of Hanna in

Pretty Little Liars

) in August 2019 in Las Vegas.

After two years of romance, the young actresses separated in May 2020. Between 2014 and 2016, the supermodel had lived a highly publicized relationship with the American musician St. Vincent.

For several months in 2014, Cara Delevingne also had a love affair with actress Michelle Rodriguez, 14 years her senior.

In 2013, it was with a man that she was in a relationship: the musician Jake Bugg.

Dating rumors with Harry Styles in 2013 and

Skins

actor Jack O'Connell in 2014 have never been confirmed (or denied).

Queer

assumed

“In the world I live in, most of my friends are straight,” she said.

“I had never been to [Gay] Pride before doing this documentary.

I have a lot more queer friends now,” she said.

From now on, the young woman feels more anchored in the community LGBTQ +.

During the Mipcom Cannes, on October 12, Cara Delevingne judged “completely crazy that we walked on the Moon before mapping the clitoris”.

Women and men need to know better the springs of female pleasure, she further estimated.

The actress of

Suicide Squad

(2016) was especially shocked to see the impact of porn on the younger generations.

The six-episode documentary series, sold in 90 countries, will be broadcast on the American platform Hulu from November 29 and on the BBC from December 1.
