Most people in Germany have to pay the license fee.

Now there could be another exception that affects hundreds of thousands.

Kassel – The broadcasting contribution (formerly GEZ contribution) continues to polarize people in Germany.

At around 220 euros a year or 18.36 euros a month, it is an additional recurring burden for many people, especially in the context of inflation and rising electricity and gas prices in Germany.

Even if everyone is initially obliged to pay the contribution, there are some exceptions that exempt from the obligation to contribute.

But several hundred thousand people apparently pay the radio license fee even though they don't really have to.

Therefore, the VdK Bayern is now complaining to the Federal Constitutional Court and the Bavarian Administrative Court in order to obtain that people in need of care are exempted from the license fee.

Specifically, it is about people who receive state care allowances and thus fall under care grade 2 at least.

The broadcasting fee tries to keep most of the citizens regular costs.

State care allowance exempt from GEZ – only Bavaria goes a different way

In other federal states such as Rhineland-Palatinate or Berlin, all citizens who receive state care allowance are automatically exempt from the broadcasting fee obligation.

Daniel Overdiek, head of the legal department at the social association VdK Bayern, explains this to the

Nuremberg press

: "Bavaria is the only federal state that grants state care allowance, but does not exempt a recipient from the broadcasting fee." This affects around 350,000 people.

Other conditions can also make it possible to be exempted from the license fee.

For example, recipients of social benefits or people with disabilities are either exempt from the license fee or only have to pay a small rate.

In addition, young people who receive BAföG and a vocational training grant can be exempted from the obligation to pay contributions.

Despite pension: license fee is mandatory

Pensioners, on the other hand, have to pay the full cost of the contribution.

There is an exception for pensioners who also receive social benefits and for recipients of Hartz 4. Refugees and asylum seekers can only avoid paying the contribution if they live in a home for asylum seekers.
