A carcinogenic substance was found in a margarine.

A wholesale market strongly advises against consumption and has started a recall of the product.

Munich – More and more people are eating margarine instead of butter because of animal welfare, their own health and food price increases due to enormous inflation.

It is also used for cooking and baking cookies.

Now, in the middle of cookie-baking season, comes a margarine recall.

Margarine recall - Glycidol in vegetable ghee

Nergiz Großmarkt GmbH informs its customers about

the recall of the margarine via the

product warning.eu portal.

The substance glycidol was detected in tests in a batch of "Vita Margarine Pure Vegetable Ghee" in the 1 kg can.

Specifically, the recall concerns:

  • Product: Vita Margarine Pure Vegetable Ghee Tin 1

  • Content: 1,000g

  • Production date: 05/09/2022

  • BBD: 09.05.2024

  • Lot identifier: PN: 119

According to the manufacturer, other batches or products are not affected by the recall.

Margarine recall - Substance contained irritates mucous membranes and can cause cancer

The BfR, the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment, has been warning for some time to reduce the levels of questionable groups of substances that contain glycidol in oils and fats, reported

Deuschlandfunk Kultur

.

"Glycidol is by no means an environmental toxin that got into the food chain through carelessness," the broadcaster said.

Rather, it is a substance that only arises during the technical processing of oils.

The BfR and other specialist institutions would unanimously classify the substance as carcinogenic.

It is true that there are traces, but in the case of a lifelong intake - and moreover via a staple food - the authority would do well to show the fat industry the red card.

Some margarine products, including Rama, can no longer be called margarine.

Margarine recall – customers can do that

Affected customers can return the item for a refund of the purchase price.

Even if it has been opened or the receipt is no longer available.
