ZAKI: 'I HOPE THIS NIGHTMARE END'

"I hope this nightmare ends soon and I can go back to study in Italy normally and have the possibility to work on my personal recovery".

Patrick Zaki, the Egyptian student of the University of Bologna writes it on Facebook on the occasion of the eighth hearing of his trial, in Mansura.

Zaki faces up to 5 years in prison for spreading false news.

Although free, after 22 months of pre-trial detention in prison, the 31-year-old gender studies researcher has an expatriation ban and cannot leave Egypt.

“I am grateful to all friends for their endless support. With each session I receive a huge number of messages of support and love making me feel that I am not alone in this difficult experience and giving me some hope that something good can happen soon ".

The student also remembers the time spent in the cell.

"One of the most important crises of those who have been in prison is that you don't leave your prison - writes the 31-year-old - even if you leave its walls, the prison stays inside you for a long time to accompany you on the rest of your journey, or this is what happens to me so far, despite everything i try hard to overcome the experience, you find it attacks you most of the time, even if you decide to engage in any joyful activity, you find memories and worries about what happened, you remember a long night Within your confines, your mind has not stopped thinking about this nightmare. Maintaining your sanity is the hardest job inside the prison."

"Today the Public Prosecutor's Office began to present its arguments and then my legal team began to present their own": Patrick Zaki told reporters when answering a question about what had happened in today's hearing in Mansura.

"They stopped us while we were presenting our papers and our arguments," added the Egyptian student from the University of Bologna.

"They withdrew to the" council chamber "and postponed for us to complete the papers we want to present to the court", Patrick said again referring to February 28th.

"This is all that happened today", he underlined, reiterating that after the interruption "we have not resumed exposing our arguments. We will see. They have postponed to resume dealing with the cards".

The researcher and human rights activist, who has been free since December 8 after 22 months in pre-trial detention on more serious charges linked to ten posts on Facebook but informally shelved, is on trial in a State Security Court for the petty (or emergency) crimes of his hometown on the Nile Delta.

Patrick is accused for a 2019 article in which he defended the Copts, Egypt's Christian minority, underlining the bloody persecutions of ISIS in previous years and two cases of social and legal discrimination.

Although free, the 31-year-old gender studies researcher has a travel ban and cannot leave Egypt.

Today's hearing was openly considered by Amnesty International as an opportunity to verify Egypt's "willingness" to open a "new phase" in relations with Italy even though the Egyptian judiciary is independent from political power, at least formally.
