Many women report menstrual cramps after a Covid-19 vaccination.

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has now examined the vaccination reaction more closely.

Already at the beginning of the corona vaccinations, some patients reported unusually heavy and changed menstrual bleeding.

Both manufacturers and regulatory authorities around the world initially rejected the fact that the complaints were due to the mRNA vaccines.

German authorities such as the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut also spoke out against a connection between vaccination and menstrual problems.

However, scientists have now been able to prove on the basis of several studies that some women suffer from increased and delayed menstrual bleeding as a result of vaccination with an mRNA vaccine.

It has long been known that vaccination against the coronavirus with an mRNA vaccine can cause various side effects.

Many women also reported altered menstruation as a result of the vaccination.

However, it was unclear for a long time whether there was a connection between the vaccination and delayed or increased menstrual bleeding.

An evaluation of all available data from studies, spontaneous reports and medical literature on the effects of the corona vaccines from Pfizer/Biontech and Moderna has now shown that heavy menstrual bleeding can occur as a possible side effect as a result of vaccination.

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) now wants to include this in the technical information and instructions for use of the corona vaccines.

The experts concluded "that there is at least a reasonable possibility that the occurrence of heavy menstrual bleeding is causally related to these vaccines".

Vaccination is still recommended

After a Covid-19 vaccination with an mRNA vaccine, some women may have heavier menstrual periods than usual.

According to the European Medicines Agency, this can be the case after the first or second, but also after a booster vaccination.

Although the symptoms were mostly temporary and classified as not serious, the results help to increase confidence in medicine.

Corona vaccination is therefore not advised against.

The product information should therefore only be supplemented with a corresponding note.

According to a recent study, up to 42 percent of menstruating people are affected by the unintended consequences of a vaccination.

Breakthrough bleeding also occurred as a result of the vaccination in those who had no longer had regular bleeding due to menopause or medication.

Nevertheless, the authorities point out that menstrual disorders are very common and there are many possible reasons for changes.
